Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about microcement — what it is, where it goes, how it performs, and how to order with confidence. Can’t find your answer? Our team is one message away.

  • Microcement is a thin, cement-based decorative coating applied by hand in layers just 2–3 mm thick. It bonds over existing surfaces — tiles, concrete, plasterboard, screed and more — to create a continuous, seamless finish with a soft, natural texture.

Because it is built up in coats rather than poured or laid like a slab, it adds almost no height or weight, which makes it ideal for renovations where ripping out the old surface isn’t practical.

  • Almost anywhere. Microcement works on walls, floors, ceilings, stairs, benchtops and vanities, and in wet areas such as bathrooms and showers. With the right system it can also be used outdoors — alfresco areas, patios and feature walls — and around pools.

The key is matching the right product to the job: floors and benchtops need harder-wearing grades, while walls can take finer, smoother finishes. Each surface also needs a sound, properly prepared and primed substrate underneath.

  • Yes, microcement is excellent for showers, wet areas and pools — but it’s important to understand how. Microcement is a decorative finishing system, not a waterproofing membrane. In a shower or pool, a compliant waterproofing membrane must be installed first as part of the substrate; the microcement is then applied over that prepared, waterproofed base and sealed on top.

Once sealed correctly, the finished surface is highly water-resistant and easy to keep clean — which is exactly why it’s so popular for seamless showers. For pools and full submersion we supply dedicated pool-grade products and sealers designed for constant water contact. If in doubt, talk to us about the right build-up for your project.

  • Both are possible. Confident DIYers do take on feature walls and smaller surfaces, and we’re happy to supply the products and guidance to help you succeed. That said, microcement is an applied finish where the result depends heavily on technique — substrate prep, layering, trowel work and sealing all affect how it looks and lasts.

For floors, wet areas, showers, pools and large continuous surfaces, we strongly recommend an experienced applicator. If you’d like, we can point you toward trained installers or support your own team through the process.

  • It depends on the product and the number of coats. As a rough guide, a full system includes a base/body coat plus finer finishing coats, so you’ll order more than one product. Coverage varies from around 17–20 m² per bucket for heavier base layers up to 80 m² for the finest finishing coats.

The clearest place to plan quantities is our Technical Data & Coverage page, which lists exact spread rates per product. Remember to include primers, sealers and a little extra for waste — and reach out if you’d like us to help size your order.

  • Microcement starts as a neutral base and is tinted to order using dedicated toners. The depth of colour you choose determines how much toner goes into the mix — deeper shades need more toner than soft, pale tones — so colour and price are linked to the shade you select.

Because every batch is tinted for your project, we recommend confirming your shade before ordering. You can explore the full range on our colours page, and we always suggest reviewing colour in your own light before committing to a large surface.

  • Very durable when installed and sealed correctly. Microcement is cement-based and, once it has cured and been protected with the right sealer, it stands up to daily foot traffic, water and general wear — which is why it’s used on floors, benchtops and in commercial spaces.

Like any surface it isn’t indestructible: very sharp impacts can chip it and harsh chemicals should be avoided. The good news is that the sealer takes most of the wear and can be refreshed over time, helping the finish stay looking its best for years.

  • Day to day, microcement is wonderfully low-maintenance. For routine cleaning, use a soft cloth or mop with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid bleach, abrasive scourers and strong acidic or alkaline products, as these can wear the sealer prematurely.

Over the years, high-traffic floors and wet areas benefit from a re-application of sealer to keep their protection and finish at their best. We can recommend the right maintenance sealer for your surface when the time comes.

  • We ship Australia-wide from our base in Springwood, Queensland. Because products are tinted to your chosen colour, most orders are prepared before dispatch, then sent via courier with delivery times depending on your location.

If you have a deadline or a large project to plan around, contact us before ordering and we’ll give you an accurate lead time and the best freight option for your delivery.

  • Unopened, undamaged stock items in resaleable condition can generally be returned — just get in touch first so we can arrange it. Because tinted-to-order colours and custom mixes are made specifically for you, these are not able to be returned, so we always recommend confirming your colour and quantities before ordering.

If anything arrives damaged or faulty, contact us straight away with photos and we’ll make it right. For full details, see our store policies or reach out to our team.

If you’re a trade customer looking to add microcement to your services, get in touch and we’ll help you get set up with the right products and know-how.

  • Sample boxes are coming soon. We’re finalising our premium sample kits so you can feel the texture and see the colours in your own space before committing to a full order.

In the meantime you can register your interest and we’ll let you know the moment they’re available, or contact us to discuss colours for your project.
